Age Restrictions for WCG 2008

Due to tighter legislation in Germany, the location of the WCG 2008 Grand Final, Entrants to the 2008 Games will have to comply with the games USK age rating, in addition to UK restrictions enforced by the BBFC.

We understand this may cause disappointment for some people, however it has been made clear that no exceptions will be made for foreign players when it comes to the Grand Final.

The restrictions are as follows:

Game USK Rating BBFC Rating You must be born before
Age of Empires III: Asian Dynasties 12+ - 6th November 1996
Carom 3d TBD - -
Command & Conquer 3: Kane’s Wrath 16+ - 6th November 1992
FIFA 08 - - Everyone can take part
Half-Life: Counter-Strike 16+ - 6th November 1992
Need for Speed: Pro Street 6+ - 6th November 2002
StarCraft: Brood War 12+ - 6th November 1996
Warcraft III: The Frozen Throne 12+ - 6th November 1996
Guitar Hero 3 - 12 6th November 1996
Halo 3 18+ 15 6th November 1990
Project Gotham Racing 4 6+ - 6th November 2002
Virtua Fighter 5 Online 16+ - 6th November 1992

As previously, if you are under 16, you will need a signed parental consent form.

Update (29th May, 2008): C&C3 is a 16+, not 18+ game as previously stated. Apologies for any confusion.

Update (1st June, 2008): It’s come to our attention that whilst Guitar Hero III doesn’t have a German USK rating it is a BBFC 12 rated game, as such you need to be 12 or over to enter this competition. Additionally Halo is a BBFC 15, however this is superceeded by the German USK 18+ rating.

    hey there
my names matt and i think the halo 3 age should be changed from 18+ down to 17+ because iv been a proffessional gamer for 3 years and i turn 17 this year and i missed out last year coz i was to young and iv been waiting ages for wcg 2008 to come so i can rep my country at the finals in germany.

    cheers.

    Hi Matt,

I know it sucks! Unfortunately these are imposed by German law, not something we have any control over as I’m sure you can appreciate ;) We can let you enter the UK qualifiers, but even if you won, we would be unable to take you to Germany.

This really isnt fair. The game is a 16+ and ive been a pro gamer for 3 years. My team has won the past 2 halo3 team events and now me and another team mate are only 3 weeks off being 18 for the finals. So now they are going to have to find another two.

Is the no way we can bring parents over aswell ? I know its asking alot, but it seems really unfair , because most of the pro gamers are 17 and do not turn 18 until after November..

  4. RTO

    Hi Shan,

I’m afraid as I mentioned in my previous comment it is German Law prohibiting people under the age of 18 take part. Not something which is going to be avoid by bringing parents along, I’m afraid.

  5. Shan

Ok dont worry about it :)

Would help alot of people if it was just a month later ..

  6. Grant

  10. Davinder

Could you tell me abit about the brackets please. The gametypes you will be using.

I would appriciate it if you could provide this information. Thank you .

    thanks in advance

  12. RTO

    @ Grant:
More information on the dates (and locations) of the national and regional qualifier events will be posted soon. We’re still tieing up some loose ends at the moment :)

    @ Sana:
You may only participate (and qualify) for the UK team if you hold a UK passport.

    @ Davinder:
We’re working on a load of updates for the site at the moment (including updating it to say 2008, not 2007 ;)). Information about game types, etc will be released when the new site goes live.

    @ Lewis:
There isn’t a registration link at the moment. One will be available when we update the site and publish all the information about qualifiers, etc.

I hope that answers everyone’s questions. Please do keep them coming if you have any more :)

I believe you have changed the rules to those that are of MLG. Have you updated the maps so that there is no equpiment on them. E.g. Bubble shields etc.

  14. maverick

hey i was jus wonderin when and where is the uk wcg held please reply

    thanx

  15. Singh

This is abit poorly organised isnt it, you havent given out any details about the tournament, double elim/single elim. Where it will be held, How many teams are allowed to enter, Online qualifiers. Get it sorted.

  16. RTO

Singh: as I have said previously a major revamp of the website will be coming very shortly. The WCG is 6 *months* away, there is plenty of time to get everything organised. What you haven’t seen is a large amount of organisation that goes on behind the scenes between ourselves, Samsung and ICM (who organise the WCG Internationally). We have been putting in place the details of UK qualifiers and Finals, now that these have been agreed upon they will be announced shortly. Good things come to those who wait :)

  17. singh

Yes but the qualifers are about 2 months away. Which rules/type of bracekts need to be organised and addressed.

  18. RTO

We’re just waiting on clarification from ICM (who organise the WCG) then we’re good to go.

  19. SINGH

If I take my team 3 of who are 18+ and we win the qaulifiers, would we be able to replace our 4th team mate for the finals in Germany ?

  20. RTO

As in the original post you all need to comply with the age restrictions for the duration of the tournament. This includes the UK Nationals.

  21. RTO

Update to original post. C&C3 is a 16+ game, not 18+ as originally stated.

  22. tOk

i’m glad no kids will be there!

  23. Mindgame

Was a great idea to host the games in Germany then if they have stupid age restrictions on players, parents should moderate the content for under 18 year olds not the government who cannot asess each individuals take to the game

  24. zaphod

by any chance could you make a under 18 comp becuase it would please alot of people?

  25. Raven246

German Age Restrictions suck horrible… I’m French and my teammate was born in december 1990, not before 6th November 1990. Just for a fcking month, he wouldn’t be allowed to participate ??? Even with a parental authorization ?? They sould say ” Age restrictions are in functions of YOUR OWN country. If you’re 17 and French or English (as an example), you can participate because YOUR country’s laws allow you to play the game in question… WE ARE NOT GERMAN GIRLS !!!!!!!!!!
